About
Lightning in a jar. A beam to build on.
Leyden & Beam exists for one reason: to help people turn the sparks of their own thinking into work that lasts, without anyone, or anything, doing the thinking for them.

The name
Two old ideas, one new tool
Catching the spark
In the 1740s, in the Dutch city of Leiden, experimenters discovered they could store an electric charge in a glass jar. For the first time, a spark could be caught and kept. Ideas are like that: brilliant, sudden, and gone unless you catch them.
Building the structure
A beam is what builders use to turn loose timber into something that stands. Writing needs the same thing: a frame that holds your ideas in the right order, strong enough to carry an argument, a story or a book.

What we believe
Four commitments we will never trade away
No AI, anywhere
Your thinking and your words are the whole point. We will never put a model between you and your work.
Nothing you bring is lost
Whatever you bring in from elsewhere arrives whole, checked character by character.
Records describe, never judge
The record of your work shows what happened. It never scores you or compares you to anyone.
Seats, never surveillance
A school can pay for your account. It can never look over your shoulder.
Paid for by writers. Answerable to writers.
How we stay independent
There are no ads in Leyden & Beam and no free tier paid for by your attention. The people who write in it are the people who pay for it, so the only people we answer to are you.
